Pear crumble is the ultimate autumnal dessert. It’s got fresh pears with a crunchy, oaty crumble topping. It’s super a super easy recipe, so it’s one of the simplest desserts kids can help make.
There’s no easier dessert to make than a delicious crumble. With a simple fruity filling and crunchy crumble topping, kids and beginner bakers can have this dessert ready in no time. Apple crumble is the classic version of the dish, but swapping the fruit for pears makes a lovely change and is a great way of showcasing this autumnal fruit.
How can kids help to make a pear crumble?
Crumbles are great desserts to make with kids. They’re probably among the easiest things you can make and were one of the first recipes I made with my kids.
Making the crumble topping is very easy and a bit hands on which is fun for kids. You don’t need any special equipment either – simply get your kids to measure out the butter and flour and then rub them together with their finger tips. Then they can add the sugar and oats, mix it all together and your topping is done. It’s that simple.
Children can also help to prepare the fruit. Pears are a lovely soft fruit so even young children can help to peel or cut them up with a blunt knife.
Finally, once you’ve made the topping and prepared the fruit your kids can help to assemble them in the dish.
How ripe do the pears need to be?
Pears become a lot softer as they bake so you don’t need the pears to be too ripe. Slightly under ripe pears are actually perfect in this recipe.
Why is my crumble topping not crunchy?
Some crumbles can end dry if there isn’t enough butter but with this recipe should be fine in that regard. If you do find your crumble is too crumbly you could try adding a bit more butter. Either rub it in or melt it and add it in that way.
Likewise your crumble may end up soggy if you’ve used too much butter or if you’ve not baked it for long enough. Again, if you follow the quantities and instructions in this recipe, with the addition of oats this crumble is lovely and crisp.
What do you serve pear crumble with?
Crumbles are delicious served simply on their own, but if you want to really treat yourself add a serving of custard or vanilla ice cream.
Can you freeze a pear crumble?
Yes, crumble can be frozen for up to three months. Once the crumble has been baked and cooled, you can wrap it well in cling film or glad wrap and put it in the freezer. To serve it, either defrost it and reheat it in the oven until the filling is piping hot. You could also cook it from frozen, although you may need to adjust the timing up a little.
Can you reheat a cooked crumble?
Yes. We never finish a crumble in one sitting unless we’ve got friends round. You can reheat it in the oven the next day on a medium heat for about 20 minutes.
How do you store a pear crumble?
Keep your crumble covered in the fridge. It will keep for a few days.

50g (1/3 cup) rolled oats
How to make a pear crumble
Preheat your oven to 190C / 170C Fan / 375F
Make the crumble topping
Measure out the butter and flour. Chop the butter into small pieces, or you could grate it if you find that easier. Add the butter and flour to a large mixing bowl or food processor.
Get your kids to rub the butter and flour together with their finger tips until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs.
If you have a food processor you can use that to make the breadcrumb mixture. Simply pulse them both together until it’s ready.
Get your kids to measure the sugar and porridge oats out and add them to your mixing bowl. Mix them in with a spoon.
Prepare the pears
Get your kids to help you peel, core and cut up the pears into bite sized pieces.
You might find it easier to cut the pears into quarters and remove the core before getting your kids to chop them into smaller pieces.
Make the pear crumble
Tip the pear into your baking dish and sprinkle over the sugar. Make sure the pears a nicely spread out over the base of the dish.
Next, get your kids to pour or spoon the crumble topping over the top of the pears. Again, make sure they get a nice even coverage over the top of the fruit.
Bake the pear crumble
Bake the crumble for 40-45 minutes. It’s ready when the crumble topping has turned a nice golden brown colour and the pear mixture should be bubbling through in places.
Serve and enjoy.
